This week we welcome Ravina, @ravinasniper, as guest editor!

This is her original photo…

and here are her selections…

1. @Dmreidmd

2. @bowandaarow

3. @narcosislabs

This is what Ravina has to say about this week’s selections:

Man, this was really hard!  I loved all the edits so much, but there were a few that really stood out to me.  Thank you so much for letting me be a guest editor for #decim8nday!!

1. dmreidmd

“Crying Eyes” – I was drawn to the vibrant blues of this edit right away!  The ominous black shape at the top and static-y lines of #beamrider made the image dynamic and a bit spooky.  I felt like I was looking at a David Lynch movie still!

2. bowandaarow

This is a prime example of what I love about #decim8!  This image came out minimalist and beautifully balanced; the bits and pieces come together almost like hands reaching out or buildings soaring up into the sky.  The #decim8tion here is just wonderful.

3. narcosislabs

The ghosting in this image is just fantastic.  I like the neon lemon-yellow shivering over the grey with a rusty sort of echo.  In opposition to my other favorites, I like that the image remains relatively whole here, only being color-shifted by #doctorocular.  Trippy and wonderful!

The Cr8ors of Decim8nday [ @_suzanne_ and @david_baer ] and I thank you for participating this week – we hope to do it again in the future!

Stay tuned as we welcome Cecily, @cecilyc, as guest editor for week 17.

One Screen Schoolhouse Highlights- Monochromatic

I had a really hard time picking highlights  from last week so i just chose a ton. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. There are so many amazing artists that participate in the #juxtschoolhouse tag. The latest subject was thinking and shooting with a monochromatic palette in mind. We explored the idea of “seeing in black and white” and the strategy behind finding images that will translate well into a monochromatic color scheme. To read the entire post go here.

This image came about as I discovered self-portraiture as a means to explore and examine my troubles.  I wanted a photo that showed me coming apart, but underneath was the same old me.  I’ve always thought I had tremendous self-knowledge, but I’d been fooling myself.  My probing proved to be superficial, thus not producing any substantive changes in my life.  I chose Decim8 for the primary edit, as it generates images which are not straightforward, letting the viewer find different interpetations.  I used PhotoCopier to make the image pallid and monochromatic, to enhance the moodiness.

Apps used:
Hipstamatic
Decim8

Melbourne, 1 November, miserable day, 4 cups of coffee, feeling a little shaky, light streaming in, girl in a brightly-stripely dress, she leans up against wall waiting for her takeaway, rest phone on table, open up Hipsta, keep talking to my companion who is none-the-wiser, click. Hope I got it… Another coffee?

JohnS and Claunch, a real favourite but particularly in that light. – @shazalenko13

Well first, I love roadside diners and I go out of my way to drop in to this one in upstate New York a few times a year.  And second, my roots are in black and white photography, my first love, so I can just see certain shots in black and white. Huge, long time fan of Walker Evans, Duane Michals, Stieglitz, Weston, Cunningham and the like and have spent countless hours in the photography wing of the Met in NYC staring at the…what, the purity and artistry of the images and craft. Like I said: my first love. When I moved to NYC 23 years ago and into a 5th floor walk-up in the east village, I had to sell my darkroom equipment and find other creative outlets. With iphonography and the emergence of mobile artistry I have been able to reconnect with my native roots and image-making inclinations. What a joy! I am very appreciative of the mobile artistry community and the ability it gives us to share and connect with one another world wide. So. Back to the photo. I had just finished a plate of hash and eggs in a diner full of bikers and farmers and came out to my car to find this shot waiting for me. I took it with my native iPhone4 camera, tweaked and cropped it in Snapseed, my app of choice, then utilized the black and white feature of Snapseed, using the Red filter. That’s it. The light was just right, the clouds were striking and the sun perfectly positioned in the sky to paint this picture with light. @lucizoe

Photo was taken in November 2012, in the suburbs of Poznań, Poland
with standard IPhone4S camera.
Edited a bit to make it B/W and change contrast, then cropped to
square with Instagram.

I use to drive there almost everyday. The place is on my way from home
to my kids’ school.
I was stuck in a traffic jam and just saw it from my car’s window…
I knew it’s gonna be a great B/W frame. Even though in happens a lot
there in terms of visual content it’s still
very condensed picture. It reminds me all those great pictures by
Wlaker Evans…

A HUGE thank you goes out to all the artists that tag images every two weeks. I have such a great time look through and taking in all of their creativity.

This is his original photo…

and here are his selections…

 1. @_edson__

2. crystalmoody

3. @cekws

This is what Tim has to say about this week’s picks:

1. @_edson__

There were a number of dot matrix inspired transforms that were submitted and I had a hard time picking one above the other – but in the end I ended up going with this little number. I love the way she pops out from the white space and also the little cyan patch in the upper left.  Clean and beautiful.

2. @crystalmoody

This one really appealed to me. I love the ‘A’ that showed up but also the mix of metallic tones with the warmer orange and green.  It is awesome!

3. @cekws

I was immediately blown away by Lady Liberty and the genius creativity behind it.  Totally amazing at what transpired here!

Still Life Lounge Showcase

For this week’s retrospect I chose Dino’s photo because of the gorgeous contrast between the dark background and fruit itself. It is so delicate, yet exotic tucked away in the papery husk. A shot like this is what the lounge is all about, using everyday items to capture beauty. Thank you Dino!

I bought a box of Physalis fruits for one of the challenges. I was looking for something different, the cherry sized fruits are inside these papery cases. I had to tear the top right on open to show the fruit. There is a garden variety where the outsides are orange, commonly known as Chinese Lanterns. I took the original version in Hipstamatic, Hormbecker lens & Ina’s 1982 film ( my favourite combo these days). I think I then grunged it up in Scratchcam. – Dino, @dinopi

This is his original photo…

and here are his selections…

 1. @postaljeff

2. @juras77

3. @cekws

Below is the list of Doc’s three favorites this week & his insight:

1. @postaljeff  – Minimalism, plus motion. Dig that the leaf is still readable.

2. @juras77 – Symmetry! This was my favorite of the symmetrical entries. Motion lines are dope too.

3. @cekws – The colors sort of flow along with the original, and those shapes are just swell.

Congratulations everyone! We are going to be taking a week off from the #decim8this program this week, but it will be a regular decim8nday! Run 1 of your recent 12 posts on IG through Decim8 & tag fx used.  See ya next week!

#stilllifelounge Weekend Showcase

We have been taking a short interlude over at the lounge spending time with family and traveling. Well, Jen has been doing the travelling.  Check her stream, @ikebana_jen to see some beautiful stills from her travels.

Our look back at the lounge this week was the theme of groupings of threes. Larissa @larissakalinka tagged a delicate image full of gorgeous textures. – Anna Cox

More often than not, I return home from my wanderings (big and small) with little found treasures in my pockets or bag. Like a Bowerbird, I take those treasures home and decorate my nest with them. Unlike the Bowerbird though, I don’t display these treasures to impress others… Those gems are really like (soul)food, both for me and my art.

For the Still Life Lounge theme ‘Grouping of three items’ (Jeeej! three, my favorite number), I kind of randomly picked some of the found gems and put them on a piece of paper that I was working on at the moment. And then, it can take forever and a couple of shots…or more (it’s all about detail and atmosphere) till I have the image that I seem to be looking for.

I love the #stilllifelounge because it has every thing to do with seeing beauty in everyday life. It’s a wonderful way to see all the different treasures (and all things become one, just by taking the time to really see them… and at times even take a picture). But maybe even more important, it’s a great way to connect with other Bowerbirds.

Thank you Anna and Jen for creating this wonderful tag and inspiration. I feel honored and am truly grateful!

#sundaybluesedit Sunday Selection @_mulb

Rebecca: Monika @_mulb is an instagrammer I have followed for as long as I can remember in my time on Instagram.  Her gallery is full of raw and honest emotion mixed in dark mystery.  We’ve connected over lost love, depression and sleeplessness.  My friendship with @_mulb is a testimony to how mobilephotography crosses borders, language and space.  Spend some time in her gallery.  I promise you will not leave empty handed.  She is a gift.

Monika: There is this moment and this specific mood, when I know that I have to take a pic. The following process to finish it can take hours or maybe weeks. I know from the first moment, that I will use it, some day.

I’m taking photos since many years, I’ve the diploma of a photo school and I spent days, weeks, months in my dark room. I always wanted to show more than a pic. I needed a story. Mobile art is the perfect way for me to take and edit my pics and to tell stories with them. photography is my most important instrument, but sometimes, when I’ve time, I prefer videos (you can see some on mulb.tumblr.com).

One year ago I went to a cemetery, where I was never before. I didn’t know why, but I had the feeling that I have to go there. I took this pic. 2 months later my dad died and he was buried there. I guess it was a hunch. the headless people and the watering cans are now a part of my life.

You can see Monika’s emotional gallery on Instagram at @_mulb

This week we welcome Tammy, @punkrawkpurl, as guest editor!

This is her original photo…

and here are her selections…

1. @bridgettesxo

2. @rmsherwood

3. @shadowleitner

“There are as many approaches and styles to Decim8, as there are folks who use the app. I tend to decim8 on the slightly subtle side, usually post processing for texture or tonal balance and sometimes even blending with the original image. I’ve learned a lot by seeing my own photo edited by so many other folks, and in so many styles. I am inspired to spend a little more time with some FX that I don’t typically use. Thank you to everyone who participated this week with my image! Oh what a task to choose only 3 images from such a wonderful batch! Like a child in a candy shop, I hemmed and hawed and maybe even shed a tear over not being able to choose them all. But choose I did.

1. @bridgettesxo’s lovely art deco dance of the Decim8 stopped me in my tracks… and those olive and blue green ‘feathers’… totally swoon worthy. She used Veth + 59.94 & then added a dose of Glassdagger to that.

2. @rmsherwood’s delicate decim8ed lace curtains, classy enough for Grandmas house, but hip enough for mine. She used TI994(SHA5 Mix), Fold4Rap5, and Kompliance.

3. @shadowleitner’s sweet enchanted forest. I was happily lost in the melon hued land, skipping on my way to granny’s house. She used Veth, Agency, and Doctor Ocular. & be sure you look closely to see the lovely colors carried all the way up through the black.

Check out my feed for some honorable mentions… I told you I couldn’t pick only 3.” – Tammy

The Cr8ors of Decim8nday [ @_suzanne_ and @david_baer ] and I thank you, Tammy, for rawk’ing this week with us – we hope to do it again in the future!

Stay tuned as we welcome the one and only Doctor Popular, aka @docpop, as guest editor for week 14.

#Sundaybluesedit Sunday Showcase @cheatlecat

Rebecca: As I have grown my Sunday tag, I’ve see artists grow and change. One I watch every week is @Cheatlecat.  Cat is young compared to most of my sunday artists but her self awareness and expression speaks volumes about her.  I love waiting to see what she will come up with next.  Watch her evolve.  Its going to be good!

Happy Sunday

Cat: I found Instagram just by looking through the photography section in the app store. I have always been interested in mobile photography, and was constantly looking for new things to try, and experiment with. Since discovering it, I’ve always loved being on Instagram. I would find people many different ways, and then end up seeing them already connected, already talking, already Instagram buddies. I saw how much of a loving community Instagram had, and have always wanted to be a part of such a community. I am Cat, Catherine or cheatlecat. I’ve been on Instagram since the start of my highschool life. I now, three years later seem to be thinking in Instagram, thinking in the square, thinking of new things I want to do, or try. I like looking back, down my Instagram feed, and seeing how much I have progressed, matured, and grown as an artist and person. My photos used to consist of still life, with high contrast. Where as today I would like to think of them as dreamy, moody, and mysterious. I’ve always seemed to get a large amount of my inspiration and thoughts from a variety of song lyrics, and the weather.

Self portraits have always seem to have pleased me the most. I love seeing how people think of themselves, or choose to represent and portray themselves strikes a chord with me. I seem to enjoy my own self portraits as much as I enjoy others. I enjoy the more natureiness pictures, too. But, I seemed to grow tired of those on their own, which led me to morphing and blending self portraits with nature shots. That’s mainly what I do these days, blending multiple pictures together, hoping they line up in a pleasing manner.

I often don’t enjoy having my picture taken by somebody who isn’t myself, or the occasional close friend or family member. I have refused to get my school picture taken for years. The idea, and situation of sitting still and putting on a smile is too insincere for me to want to take part in it. Knowing that that is what I don’t like, while photographing myself, or other people, I try and do the opposite. It’s a very awkward thing, to have your picture taken.

Still Life Lounge Showcase

This week at the Lounge we had a theme of found objects. The only requirements were that someone else arrnaged the subject, it could  be  a display in the store or a forgotten item. As always, our community delivered succent photos from mannequins to newspapers, toliets to mops. Jen and I are always so impressed by the talent and unique points of view our photographers bring to the table.

This week’s highlight is from Erin Cindric @lifewithart. I loved this photo for a couple reasons. One, the man made against nature always poses and interesting juxtapostion. It is truely one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I also liked the competeing textures.

“beach debris” can trash be beautiful? The shores of Lake Ontario has recently become my favorite local for photography…the water, the tress, the birds all provide great subject matter. But on this day I was looking for something different and when I came across this washed up tire I was saddened to see this type of debris. It looked so out of place but yet had a subtle beauty to it. It brought back memories of collecting bits of beach glass which again are beautiful but really a sign of the garbage that gets thrown into our lakes and rivers.

This type of subject has been inspired by the work of photographer Chris Jordan. Please check out his work.

‘Beauty is truth, truth is beauty,’ – John Keates

As always, thank you to all of our artists. Jen (@ikebana_jen) and I will be taking a small break from the lounge to regroup and redefine

Decim8 This with Leslie

Welcome to Week 12 of #Decim8nday’s Decim8 This.

Every Sunday @Decim8nday will post an original / unedited image submitted by our guest editor of the week.

Decim8ors are to:

  • Screenshot the image and save to their camera roll
  • Decim8 the image using any singular or combination of effects
  • We ask that no other apps are used and that images are processed only with the Decim8 app
  • List each effect used and hashtag it with #Decim8nday and #Decim8this_( guest editor’s username)
  • Post by Tuesday, 9:00 AM PST for a chance to get featured here and on @Decim8nday Wednesday!

On Wednesday we’ll announce the guest editor’s top 3 images!

This week we welcome Leslie, @lesslee63, as guest editor!

This is her original photo…

and here are her selections…

1. @blortblort

2. @dragana_s

3. jancaru2

Here’s what Lesslee had to say about this week’s decim8ions:

1.  @blortblort

This image by @blortblort uses the Decim8 effects 01Rectine and Veth. I chose it most of all because of the gorgeous, psychodelic color (thanks to 01Rectine) and also becqause of the way the Veth effect gave it a figural quality (it seems to have two eyes and two paws). Decimate frequently liberates figures and faces that we didn’t know were hiding in our images! Thank you @blortblort for sharing this fun image with us.

2.  @dragana_s

used the Decim8 effects Pregog1, Veth, and L225 to produce a nine image grid of edtits. The colors stay true to my original image but the resulting tribal masks are just fantastic. I especially like the buck-toothed twins at the top right and the mask with the protruding “tongue” on the bottom left.

3.  @jancaru2

Janell Carlson chose to let the Decim8 app choose the effects (Bunker and  Brainfeed3r) and this is the beautiful, and minimal, result. I love the pink and white and the way the image seems to spread across the canvas. I think its a good idea to try a roll of the Decim8 dice when starting to edit an image. You might be pleasantly surprised by what appears on the screen.

The Cr8ors of Decim8nday [ @_suzanne_ and @david_baer ] and I thank you, Matt, for participating this week – we hope to do it again in the future!

Stay tuned as we welcome Tammy, @punkrawkpurl, as guest editor for week 13.

#stilllifelounge Sunday Showcase

In this week’s still life  lounge we focused on pumpkins with all their color, texture, and shape. Pumpkins represent a coming fall season and harvest. Jen and I so enjoyed  the variety of pumpkins from orange to white and green and back again. To see all of the different photos go to #stilllifelounge_pumpkin

This week our photo is from Ling @libellule

I was in the supermarket shopping for groceries, when I discovered a display of pumpkins (this is one of those "stop, mummy has to take a pic" moment). So I took a few shots of the display with the iPhone native camera, saved them for later and continued with my shopping :) The image was cropped in Squaready and edited in Snapseed with the Drama and Grunge filters, to create the tone and mood that I wanted. Then it was sent to Fotor for some final adjustments with the Light & Color function... to bring out the details of the pumpkins. That's it. Many thanks to Jen and Anna, and We Are JUXT for the feature.
@libellule

As always, many thanks to our artists! Jen and I can't wait to see what you come up with
next!
